In short, participants who engaged in prosocial behaviors had an increase in positive emotions. The people who treated themselves or the ones who did nothing did not have an increase in positive emotions. The research didn’t imply that people should not treat themselves to things they enjoy; it simply suggested greater levels of happiness when we show kindness to others.

Lastly, the universe will take care of balancing the scales without your assistance. A bad landlord will lose rental income. The person who lies about others will have their reputation damaged. The person who doesn’t care about your feelings will have others not care about theirs.

Practicing brief moments of mindfulness can help us reset and change our mindset. Stop for a moment, take a long, slow, deep breath in. Hold it for a few seconds, and then slowly release it. Pay attention to your senses and surroundings.

Engaging in regular and consistent self-care is fundamental to building a solid foundation that helps us manage difficult times when they arise, not just get through them when they are suddenly thrust upon us. Eat healthy foods, stay active, relax, get adequate sleep, and have fun. Doing these supports resiliency in challenging times.
