Worth a Listen: 10 Podcast Episodes for Fall Comfort Cooking
By Joshua Smith
There is something about the first chilly evenings of fall that makes the kitchen feel a little more inviting. Suddenly soup sounds better, the oven starts earning its keep again, and dishes involving apples, squash, potatoes, cinnamon, or something bubbling away in a big pot seem just about right.
This week, we are looking at specific podcast episodes about fall comfort cooking — and every one comes with a recipe you can actually try at home.
1. “Fall Cooking and Bitter Flavors with Genevieve Ko and Alexina Anatole” — The Splendid Table
Fall cooking questions, cabbage ideas, Pumpkin Meringue Pie, and a Stout Sticky Toffee Pudding make this a fine place to start.
2. “Fall Baking with Carla Hall & Martin Sorge” — The Splendid Table
Fire up the oven. This episode includes recipes for Savory Parmesan Shortbread Sandwich Cookies and Coconut Caramel Brownies.
3. “Soup Season with Mariana Velásquez, Gregory Gourdet, and Jing Gao” — The Splendid Table
Three warming choices come with this episode: Colombian Sancocho, Haitian Soup Joumou, and Hot Pot.
4. “Dawn Perry Makes Weeknight Cassoulet” — Play Me a Recipe
Cassoulet usually sounds like an all-day undertaking. This version aims for hearty fall comfort using pantry staples in about half an hour.
5. “Divya Alter’s Red Lentil and Celery Root Soup” — Play Me a Recipe
Red lentils, celery root, warming spices, and fresh herbs come together in a soup made for a cool evening.
6. “Bento Box Queen Sulhee Jessica Woo’s Recipe for Hearty Homestyle Chili” — The One Recipe
Few things say fall quite like a pot of chili. This family-oriented episode shares a cozy version from cookbook author Sulhee Jessica Woo.
7. “Chef Adrienne Cheatham’s Recipe for Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Bacon-Miso Sauce” — The One Recipe
Sweet potatoes already belong on a fall table. Turning them into gnocchi with a savory bacon-miso sauce takes things up a notch.
8. “Eric Kim’s Recipe for Roasted Chicken with Fish Sauce Butter” — The One Recipe
A simple roast chicken becomes a comforting dinner with a flavorful pan sauce and plenty of practical cooking advice.
9. “Kristen Miglore Makes Marie-Hélène’s Apple Cake” — Play Me a Recipe
Fresh apples baked into a soft, custardy cake make this an especially appropriate pick after a trip to the orchard.
10. “Erin McDowell Makes Apple Pecan Pie” — Play Me a Recipe
Apples, pecans, maple syrup, cinnamon, and pie crust — that is about as fall as dessert gets.
Fall comfort food is about more than filling the stomach. It can be the smell of something baking, a soup simmering while the evening gets dark earlier, or a recipe that brings everybody back to the table.
Have a favorite fall recipe? We want to hear about it. If your family has a soup, stew, pie, casserole, bread, apple dish, or other fall favorite that deserves to be shared, email it to news@thebridgeweekly.com. We would love to feature some of our readers’ recipes in a future issue. Tell us the recipe — and, even better, tell us the story behind it.
