Worth a Listen: 10 Podcast Episodes About Football History and Culture

By Joshua Smith

There is something about football season that feels bigger than the games themselves. It is marching bands, Friday-night lights, tailgates, old rivalries, radio broadcasts, Thanksgiving traditions, and generations of fans who can still tell you exactly where they were for a certain game.

This week, instead of recommending entire podcasts, we are looking at specific episodes that explore the history and culture behind football.

1. “The Patriots: From Boston to Foxboro” — The Football History Dude
A particularly good New England pick. This series looks back at the Patriots’ early years, beginning with their 1960 arrival in the AFL and the days when the team bounced among several different home fields.

2. “The Merger: Part 3” — NFL History Podcast
This episode covers the years when the rival AFL and NFL finally came together, along with the beginnings of the Super Bowl.

3. “Inside the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Rare Artifacts & Super Bowl History” — The Biggest Game
ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap visits the Pro Football Hall of Fame to explore the NFL’s beginnings, Super Bowl history, Lombardi Trophy, rings, and artifacts from memorable games.

4. “Super Bowl XLIX: New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks” — Lombardi Memories
A detailed trip back through the Patriots’ memorable Super Bowl victory over Seattle and one of the most famous endings in NFL history.

5. “The Game with Charles Woodson | Michigan vs. Ohio State (1997)” — Games with Names
Charles Woodson joins former Patriot Julian Edelman to revisit one of college football’s great rivalries and the traditions surrounding Michigan and Ohio State.

6. “Unforgettable Traditions of College Football Fandom” — Sports Curious
This episode looks at what makes college football about more than the scoreboard, including pregame rituals, fan traditions, celebrations, and game-day culture.

7. “Thanksgiving and Football (or maybe Vice Versa)” — Dayton Triangles History
A look at the connection between Thanksgiving and football stretching back to the 1800s, long before the NFL made Turkey Day games a television tradition.

8. “Thanksgiving Football: Play-by-Play with Dan Miller” — Shaping Opinion
Detroit Lions radio voice Dan Miller talks about Thanksgiving football and the art of calling a football game on the radio.

9. “Episode #1080: Lee Greeson” — The Big Honker Podcast
A longtime Texas high school football coach discusses Friday-night football, community identity, pressure, traditions, and why high school football can become such an important part of a town.

10. “The Governor’s Cup: Louisville vs. Kentucky — Battle for the Commonwealth” — Campus Chronicles: Beyond the Game
This episode explores how a football rivalry can become wrapped up in geography, community pride, family loyalties, and tradition.

Football has changed plenty over the years, but much of what keeps people coming back has stayed the same. The game becomes part of family stories, school traditions, hometown pride, and memories that last well beyond the final whistle.
