September 18, 2025
North Haverhill, N.H. - Stephen Ward Schaufus, 71, of Briar Hill, passed away in the comfort of his home, surrounded by loved ones on Friday, September 5, 2025.
Stephen was born on April 6, 1954, in Brighton, MA, to Charles P. Schaufus Sr. and Dorothy E. (Monahan) Schaufus of Waltham, MA. On September 11, 1997, he married Leslie A. Schulz
Growing up in Massachusetts, he worked installing cable; he often spoke of the many adventures he encountered in his line of work. Upon moving to this area, he worked at HG Wood Industries for 25yrs. He would join his wife after work, first at Swampy Lane Farms milking cows, and then later at hisand Leslie’s video store, Entertainment Central in Woodsville, NH. He enjoyed visiting with the customers whether they were coming in to rent movies or just stopping in to say hello.

Stephen loved his family, especially his grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoyed bowling on the Sunday Summer Couples League or on the Men's League at Gold Crown Lanes in St. Johnsbury, VT, camping at Moose Hillock Campground in Warren, NH, gardening in his backyard, stacking his wood in his drive-way, golfing with his nephew Logan Schulz and watching The Three Stooge’s on DVD.

During their life together Stephen and his wife raised cows, pigs, goats, chickens and rabbits. He was often seen stacking his wood or tending his giant garden; which he took great pride in. He was known for being a hard worker, at the lumber mill and the dairy farm, a good neighbor, who could be called on to catch cows in the middle of the night.

He loved to tell stories about the antics his grandkids had gotten up to over the years. Most recently he shared with his hospice nurse that his granddaughter Peyton had come in one morning, when she was little, and woke him up by taking his hand and saying, “I’m ready for my coffee Grampa” and tugged on him until he got up and made it for her! Sharing stories like that brought him so much joy.

He always said how proud he was of his family. He would say his son Craig was a good provider for his family and mention how proud he was seeing him build a thriving business from the ground up and how it amazed him how hard Craig worked, he would shine talking about Herbie doing crazy stunts on the snowmobile and how he could watch him operating an excavator all day, he told anyone who would listen that Becky was a good mom and that he was thankful for her being there for him despite the fact that he would start to laugh just thinking of all times he would bust her chops just to see if she would cry, and for Angie graduating top of her class from college and for pursuing her dreams.

He was predeceased by his wife of 23yrs, Leslie Ann (Forrester) Schaufus, his parents, his sister Donna Dacey and his granddaughter Samantha L. Manning.
Stephen is survived two sons, Craig E. Schulz and wife Allison of North Haverhill, NH, Herbert E. Schulz, Jr. of Bath, NH; two daughters, Rebecca G. Schulz-Carbonneau and husband Tony of North Haverhill, NH, Angela M. Janes and husband Nicholas of Berlin, NH, brother Charles P. and wife Rachel of The Villages, FL, two sisters, Carol A. Brophy and husband Donald of The Villages, FL, Lynn Gauthier and husband Robert of The Villages, FL; eight grandchildren, Anthony Manning, Cassie Manning, Mikayla Schulz, Peyton Carbonneau, Cecile Carbonneau, Hunter Schulz, Hailey Schulz, Avery Schulz; four great-grandchildren, Brady Fish, Bailey Manning, Harper Rogers, Finley Durbin; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the home of Craig and Allison Schulz, 900 Briar Hill Road North Haverhill, NH, at a date to be determined later.
