Marjorie Elaine (Ingalls) (Lane) Moore
September 25, 1942 – June 5, 2026
Marjorie Elaine (Ingalls) (Lane) Moore, 83, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on June 5, 2026. A lifelong educator, community steward and beloved compassionate confidant to many, Marge’s life was defined by her deep love of family, her quiet generosity and her unwavering commitment to her community.
Born on September 25, 1942, in Haverhill, she was raised on Poole Brook Farm by her parents, Clark B. and M. Ernestine (Steeves) Ingalls. Alongside her siblings, Shirley, Bill and Van, she grew up embracing strong Yankee values and a deep work ethic that would guide her throughout her life.
Marge attended Haverhill Academy, graduating with the Class of 1960. She went on to pursue her passion for music, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964 from the former Northern Conservatory of Music in Bangor, Maine. Her love for learning remained lifelong; in 1980, she returned to school and earned her Master’s in Education from Plymouth State College.
An educator at heart, Marge dedicated her career to teaching in schools across New Hampshire and Vermont, including Warren, Landaff, Monroe, Bath and Bradford. Beyond the classroom, she taught both children and adults to read, sharing her belief in the transformative power of education. Between her piano instruction and her work teaching and leading 4-H, hundreds of children were enriched by her guidance, patience and encouragement. She had a unique ability to make others feel capable and valued, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Music was central to her life. A talented pianist and organist, she served churches in Groton, Ryegate, Woodsville and North Haverhill and taught piano to many students over the years.
Marge was a lifelong volunteer with the North Haverhill Fair, running the Fair food booth for many years. Her steady presence, welcoming spirit and tireless efforts made her a familiar and cherished part of the Fair for generations. She was also a former president of the North Haverhill Girls Club and was deeply involved in 4-H as a member, leader and advocate, reflecting her unwavering commitment to community service.
She found great joy in sewing, cooking, baking and especially square dancing. Her passion for square dancing took her around the world and she was honored with induction into the Hall of Fame of the Square Dance Foundation of New England.
Marge shared 30 years of marriage with her husband, Joel O. Moore of Bradford, Vermont. Together, they traveled extensively, cherishing adventures such as RV trips to Alaska.
She is survived by her children, Bret (Virginia) Lane of Dalton, New Hampshire; Karla-Mari (Preston) Chase of Landaff, New Hampshire; and Shawn (Michelle) Lane of North Haverhill, New Hampshire; her sisters, Shirley Gould and Evangalyn (Bruce) Anderson, both of North Haverhill; as well as ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind extended family, friends and a community deeply touched by her kindness and generosity.
In addition to her parents, Marge was predeceased by her brother, William Ingalls; her sister-in-law, Mary Ingalls; and her brother-in-law, Gordon Gould.
Marge had a gift for bringing people together—often hosting her own birthday celebrations and inviting the entire family. Her warmth, wisdom and unwavering spirit will be remembered by all who knew her. Those who knew Marge will remember her for her steady kindness, her willingness to help wherever needed and the simple, meaningful ways she showed her love—through a shared meal, a lesson offered or time given freely.
A celebration of Marge’s well-lived life will be held at the 4-H Building at the North Haverhill Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
The best way to honor Marge is to carry forward the spirit in which she lived: volunteer your time, learn to sew or teach someone to sew, bake a loaf of bread or read a good book. Donations in her name may be made to the North Haverhill Girls Club, c/o Ms. Janelle Bagley, 2240 Dartmouth College Highway, North Haverhill, NH 03774.
The world is undoubtedly dimmer now without her light, but her legacy of love, education and service will continue to shine through all those she inspired.
