Helena Louis Smith

Helena Louis Smith, 77, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 22, 2025, after a period of declining health.
Born on June 10, 1948, in Lisbon, NH to Orison “Joe” and Helen (Rathburn) Smith, Helena’s life was rooted in family, creativity, and the simple joys that made her happiest.
Helena grew up on the family farm and attended Lisbon schools. On September 7, 1968, she married Michael Harris in Wells River, VT. Together they built a home in Benton, NH where Helena lovingly raised her family. She also dedicated more than 20 years to Glencliff Home before retiring as a clothing supervisor. Even after retirement she continued to stay active, working part-time at the Mittersill Resort in Franconia.
Helena was a woman of many talents and boundless spirit. She was an avid reader, a talented seamstress, and enjoyed crocheting beautiful pieces for loved ones. With her creativity and resourcefulness, she could make something special out of anything. Helena also had a lifelong love of horses, which began on her childhood farm and continued through her passion for horse pulls.
Beyond her work and hobbies, Helena embraced life with joy and laughter. She loved mornings spent with a cup of coffee and a crossword puzzle, dancing in the kitchen, and singing karaoke whenever she could. Some of her happiest moments were spent adventuring with her girls, creating memories that will be cherished forever. Her quick wit, humor, and endless love will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joe and Helen Smith; the love of her life and former husband, Michael Harris; her son, Michael Scott Harris; and two brothers, Stanley and William Smith.
Helena leaves behind two daughters, Michele Harris of West Topsham, VT, Monica King and her husband Jeff of North Haverhill, NH; two cherished grandchildren, Ashleigh Meagher and her husband Brian of Brownsville, VT, and Dakota Downing of CT. She is also survived by her brothers, Ronald Smith and his wife Amanda of FL, and Daniel Smith and his wife Lydia of CO; Doug Rathburn of CO; her sister, Brenda Smith and her partner Charlie Coulstring of Benton, NH; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever remember her love and light.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025, from 5:00 –7:00 PM at Ricker Funeral Home & Cremation Care of Woodsville. A memorial service will follow on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 2:00 PM, also at the funeral home.
