Is Writing Worth It?
Tina Gilson
September 18, 2025
I began writing this column years ago because I was being inundated with requests for more information about the magical, mystical and mundane. There were people having experiences they couldn’t understand, things they never felt safe talking about previously, and people who were just curious.
I have had many people thank me for what I have written, who expressed appreciation or surprise, others say they look forward to my column every week and who just find it interesting or helpful in some manner. This is what has kept me going when I felt as though I had nothing new to say, didn’t have much time in my schedule or I just plain didn’t feel like writing.
That brings me to today. While I realize the planets are currently not working in anyone's favor and we are all going through some rough times, individually and as a nation, I am at a place where I am unsure if I want to bother writing anymore. I am fed up and question if any of the things I have written about over the years have made one bit of difference.
This is not about me, although it sounds like it is. It is about us as a collective. Yesterday there was yet another school shooting and a conservative public figure was shot. There are people on both sides of the political spectrum who vilify the other side regarding the same situation. They are focused on what happened to “their side” while ignoring the same situation happening to “the other side”, all while there should be no side. We should be in this together.
I have seen a lot of positive things in the last 24 hours as well. I can’t ignore that. Many content creators have been very clear that while they despised the man who lost his life, they are appalled by it and do not support it in any way. They expressed concerns for the family and for the bigger picture beyond this one event. They are showing kindness and compassion where it was not extended to them.
I am far from being an angel. I have said and done plenty of unkind things in my day. I own that, take responsibility for it and have done the work on healing those wounds that made me behave that way. I will never be perfect, and neither will you. But that doesn’t mean we can’t try to do and be better. We do not have to agree with each other or even like each other to be decent to each other.
I close this with no real conclusion or direction. I am frustrated and I am thoroughly disgusted by the behaviors that have become acceptable and even encouraged. I can’t make anyone open their eyes or minds, or force people to look at themselves deeper when they don’t want to. I can’t make anyone see they are part of the problem but also part of the solution. I have some thinking to do. I hope you do too.
