Time Passing
Michael T Hahn
August 14, 2025
Decades ago my mother told me that the older she got, the quicker time seemed to pass. Ma was right. Although the passing of time remains constant, our perception of the passing of time accelerates. This phenomenon doesn't apply to minutes, hours, or days. These shorter periods of time seem to be the same as they¥ always been, but weeks, months, and especially years fly by faster than ever.
This quickening of time might explain why I haven't been fishing since Fathers Day Weekend. I certainly intended to wet a line this summer. Life got in the way. Every day, my to-do list grows longer instead of shorter. I'm not complaining about the time I spend playing music at gigs, rehearsing, or writing and recording songs. I love it! I`less enthusiastic about my groundskeeping chores, but I do enjoy gardening. I had a poor spinach crop this year, probably because it got too hot too soon, and my cucumbers got a late start, because they needed to be re-planted twice. On the other hand, the lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, cabbages, Brussel sprouts and corn are all thriving. I had a bumper crop of peas, and I`in the process of dehydrating tomatoes. Thereàbeen plenty of tilling, weeding, and reaping. While I'm fond of these activities, I don't really love mowing the lawn and running the string trimmer.
Although I like my new battery-powered string trimmer, I still mow my lawn with a walk-behind mower. I could afford a riding mower. I could even afford to pay someone else to mow my lawn, yet I stubbornly persist in trudging around the grounds with my old gasoline-powered mower, because I need the exercise. During the heat of the summer, I walk less than at any other time of year. I still take my dog for two walks a day, but when itàhot, these walks tend to be quite short. Mowing the lawn forces me to get in a good walk about once a week. Medical studies indicate that walking regularly is one of the best things that people can do for themselves and can even help prevent dementia.
So I guess these activities explain where the summer went. Suddenly itàtime to grease up the brush hog and mow the fields. Maybe I can fish in September. As Joni Mitchell sang, "Who knows where the time goes?"
Michael Hahn Band varies in size from a duo to a six-piece band, depending upon the size and budget of the venue. They love to make music for any occasion.
