Our Area Teams Ready to Hit the Court Once Again

Another basketball season is getting ready to start. We are fortunate to have a rich history of success in our area. BMU and Oxbow both opened in the early 70’s, coaches like Mona Garone and Dean Trombley for Oxbow and Gerry Piper and Ron Brown for BMU created Championship traditions in our area. These coaches had John Bagonzi across the river, who was setting his own Championship traditions for Woodsville High School. From BMU’s boys and girls programs in the 70s to Oxbow girls’ dynasty in the 80s, to Woodsville boys' latest runs at multiple championships, and all the other championship runs we have seen in our area. This season promises to be full of excitement for local fans, featuring long-standing rivalries, showcasing high school heroes, and watching great coaches. To start our journey, let’s take a look at the upcoming season.

Starting on the New Hampshire side of the river, Woodsville is having a change at the helm with long-time boys coach Jamie Walker moving into the girls’ head coaching slot. Woodsville plays in New Hampshire's Division IV tournament. Returning starters for the Lady Engineers are Makayla Walker and Katie Houston. Paige Royer and Eliza Wagstaff were last year's graduates. The girls finished last season at 10-8. The boys' program will be led by Derek Maccini, who is well-acquainted with Walker’s program, both as an assistant coach and a former player. Last season, the team won the Division IV championship with an undefeated season. Returning this season as seniors will be Ryan Walker, Riley Emmerton, and Cowan Kimball (who will be out recovering from meniscus surgery). Woodsville had a wealth of experienced and talented graduates: Landon Kingsbury, Devin Sabina, Owen McLintock, Charles Ladd, Ethan Fenn, and Jacob Putnam.

Oxbow girls have a new coach at the helm a graduate and basketball star in her own right, Lisa Williams. Returning to the program will be Abby Longton, Brooke Osgood, Makenna Houston, and Braley Phelps. Graduating were Libby Swift and Maggie Elsworth. The girls finished last year with a 23-3 record. The boys are being coached by Jesse Ellsworth. The boys finished the season with a 6-16 record. Graduating from last year's squad were Ethan Davis, Ethan Emerson, Oden Schlager, Garrett Danforth, and Zadian Walton. Returning for their senior season are Jaxon Griffin, Griffin Pike, Johnny Smith, and Jayden Huntoon. Oxbow is a Division III school in our area.

Blue Mountain Union, which plays in Vermont's Division IV bracket, has Scott Farquharson returning to lead the girls' program. The girls finished last season a little better than .500 with a 12-10 record. Graduating last year was lone senior Madalyn Houghton. Farquharson will depend on his underclassmen again this year, as only Kolby Molten returns as a senior. Matt Page will take over as the boys' varsity coach, who finished last season with a 10-11 record. The BMU boys lost Tom Huang, Kason Blood, Will Emerson, Ryan Metzler, and Brody Kingsbury to graduation. Coming back for their senior season will be Jamal Sauibou, Evan Farquharson, Kasey Ingerson, Dylan Lacasse, and Conner Bothwell.

WYKR has a full lineup of games this season. WYKR will also be covering Rivendell Academy and Danville this year. Below is our broadcasting schedule. Please join Neil Emerson, Trevor Farquharson, Ryan Farquharson, and Robin Wozny for all your local action.
