Despite those feelings, I continued to write. In part because I feel an obligation to, in part because I am too stubborn to give up hope. I believe we and the world we live in are worth fighting for. If I can have a positive influence on even one person, it will be worth it. Hopefully, the ripple effect will carry that good energy forward and well beyond my personal reach.
I received an e-mail from a friend who is also a writer. She expressed concern for me after reading my column questioning whether to continue or not, but relief upon reading the following week's column about stress reduction. She shared some of her similar experiences and feelings, as well as simple words from a stranger, which helped her realize the value in her writing beyond what she may see.
One of the people I follow on social media, who is a fairly large creator, expressed similar feelings. The desire to stop making content because it feels as though it is making no positive difference at all. His comment section was full of people telling him it was quite the contrary and letting him know how valued and necessary his voice is. I found myself commenting as well, urging him to continue sharing his voice and to not let the negativity win. A tad ironic, don't you think?
There are a few points to writing about this. One is to show how many of us share similar experiences and feelings, both at the same point in time and at different points in time. We all have challenges and frustrations others can relate to. We are rarely alone. Others may understand us and our feelings far more than we are aware.
Another point I really want to drive home is that you may never truly know the positive impact you are having on others. There are people outside your awareness who may be inspired by you, helped by you, or even healed a little because of you. Continue to do good things, be a good person, and show kindness and compassion. It could change someoneàlife in ways you may never hear of.
Lastly, if someone has had a positive impact on your life, don't hesitate to tell them. Your kind words of support could be far more significant to them than you realize. You might be the one who helps them keep going, find motivation, inspiration, or even some hope when all hope seems lost.
