When the 2024 NFL draft was approaching, I stated that the Patriots shouldn't draft a quarterback, because I believed that the team was so deficient at so many positions that they needed to build their roster before selecting a quarterback. I thought that any quarterback would be in danger of injury, with such a questionable offensive line. I thought the team wasn't good enough to win anyway. Maybe I was right about that, as they won only four games last season, and the offensive line was penetrable, but I was certainly wrong when I suggested that the Patriots draft Marvin Harrison Jr. with the third overall pick. Arizona selected Harrison with the fourth pick, and he has put up some decent numbers . . . but not great numbers. More like a number 2 receiver than the fourth overall pick. Meanwhile, the Patriots drafted Drake Maye with the third pick, and he has delivered beyond all expectations.
I didn't predict that the Patriots would win their division this year. Neither did anyone else, but their ongoing seven-game win streak vaulted them to the top of the AFC East. Odds-makers are now picking the Patriots as favorites to win the AFC East and maybe even reach the Super Bowl. Great work by the coaching staff, the front office and players throughout the roster all contributed to their success. The greatest reason for this prosperity, however, is undeniably Drake Maye, whose stellar performance elevated him to become the favorite to win Most Valuable Player. He certainly should be favored, as he passed for more than 200 yards with a quarterback rating over 100 for 8 straight games, a feat accomplished by only four quarterbacks in NFL history: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers and Drake Maye. Mayeàquarterback rating fell below 100 in his most recent game, but he still passed for 270 yards with two touchdowns. I sure am glad the Patriots drafted him!
