Comeback

On Sunday Night Football (December 21), the New England Patriots delivered an amazing comeback, overcoming an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the Baltimore Ravens and clinch a playoff spot. This game was a roller coaster nail-biter. The Ravens scored a touchdown on their first drive. Patriots’ quarterback Drake Maye threw an interception on his first drive. Then the Ravens drove to the New England 37, threatening to put the Patriots in a double-digit hole, until safety Jaylinn Hawkins caused a fumble that safety Craig Woodson recovered. Maye led the offense 68 yards in 10 plays to tie the game.
After both teams kicked field goals, it looked like the Patriots would take a lead into halftime, until Maye fumbled just before halftime. In the third quarter the Patriots kicked another field goal, then the Ravens scored a touchdown to take a 17-13 lead. When the next Patriots drive fizzled, they attempted a fake punt, which failed. The Ravens scored a touchdown that made the score 24-13 early in the fourth quarter. I lost faith at that point, thinking that the deficit was insurmountable, but Maye completed seven straight passes, culminating in a 37-yard bomb to Kyle Williams for a touchdown. A two-point conversion to Rhamondre Stevenson tightened the score to 24-21.
The Patriot defense held, then the Patriots drove the ball from their 11-yard line to the Ravens’ 21-yard line, overcoming a terrible non-call on a blatant pass interference. Stevenson bulldozed into a go-ahead touchdown. With two minutes left, the Ravens had an opportunity to score a winning touchdown, but K’Lavon Chaisson caused a fumble that Marcus Jones recovered, sealing the win.
Maye passed for 380 yards with two touchdowns, leading the Patriots to the fourth-quarter comeback. He looks like a legitimate MVP candidate. Not all the news was good, however, as important players TreVeyon Henderson, DeMario Douglas, Khyiris Tonga and Joshua Farmer were all injured during the game. Considering that stars Will Campbell, Robert Spillane and Morgan Moses have been injured for a while, the roster looks decimated. On the bright side, the Patriots’ final two games are against the Jets and the Dolphins, two teams they should beat. If they win those games, and the Denver Broncos lose one of their final two games, the Patriots would attain home field advantage in the playoffs and stand an excellent chance of reaching the Super Bowl!
