It has been a busy spring here in Barnet! It’s that time of year where we begin to cautiously open our doors and peer out, blinking our winter-worn eyes at the bright green and gold offerings of the warmer days. We made it!

The Barnet community has certainly awoken from its slumber; we have had full house crowds at our library programs, McIndoes Academy Community Center held gardening and music talks and a very successful community breakfast, the Barnet Meetinghouse crew has been working their fingers to the bone with neighborhood meals and concerts, Barnet Fire & Rescue celebrated a crew members’ 50 years of service, The Presbyterian Church celebrated its Easter sunrise service, and the Barnet School put on a fabulous production by James Lamar. Apologies for the events I have missed.

It is the, often few and mighty, legions of volunteers in our small towns that truly make a community. Without service to causes, whatever they are, these events that tie us to something bigger, more meaningful, than simply our own daily lives, will not exist. They do not happen without you, your friends, and neighbors participating, even if it is simply attending, thanking the folks behind the scenes, sharing with others the positive that is happening all around us. Thank you to all who come out and support our town events.

The Barnet Library is in full bloom with our One Foot Forward community resilience programming. Thanks to a generous sponsorship from the Vermont Humanities, we have 10 months of free offerings open to all. We are in the final week of our very popular Chair Yoga class. Thanks to the expertise of our friend Karen Gordon, we have had a full class of 11 participants coming weekly to stretch and pause and breathe out the cobwebs of winter and ready our limbs for spring. We held a fascinating talk, attended by 17 people of all ages, on sustainable, traditional trapping by Adam and Soren Ricci. This father and son team walked us through their experiences during a season spent trapping. What a lot of work it is!

Our Native plants and pollinator species talk titled Tend to the Land, Tend to each other, given by Emma Ricci of Cloud Brook Farm, brought 20 people out to discuss and learn how to balance native and naturalized flowers in your garden to promote pollinator health. The 2nd workshop will be held April 26th at 2pm. On May 3rd we will have a Spring Ephemeral plant walk in the Roy Mtn. Wildlife area.

April 25 at 10:30am at Maplemont Farm we are having our annual Lambing Story Hour with a book, crafts, and, of course, lambs. Thanks to Amber Reed for generously inviting us to her farm every year to bask in BAAs and bleats.
