Many people have been struggling with housing, food insecurity, and an assortment of other basic needs for some time now. For many, these problems are getting worse with every passing day. I will leave political and economic debates for others. My concern is the fact that my fellow community members are struggling, and I believe no one should have to worry about their next meal, being housed, or any of their basic needs. Add the coming holidays to the mix, and itàgoing to be difficult for many.
If you are in a position to help others, I encourage you to do so. Perhaps you had a successful harvest from your garden and have extra vegetables you can share with your neighbor. If you are a hunter and have a full freezer, maybe you know someone who would appreciate receiving some meat. There are many local organizations that collect clothing, need financial donations, or even those that could use some volunteers. This is the perfect time to give back in any way you can.
For those in need of assistance, there are many organizations you can reach out to for help &/or information on available resources. Many local churches have food banks, as do some medical facilities. There are programs such as VeggieVanGo, in the Barre and Randolph area that provide free fruits and vegetables from 11:30-12:30 on the second Thursday of every month. For more information on that program, call 802-728-2377.
Operation Santa Claus, a program providing various items to families in need, is still going strong in our area. They always welcome donations and volunteers if you are able to help. If you need help for your family, you can apply online at https://form.jotform.com/252996909776078 or through the mail at P.O. Box 115 Bradford, VT 05033.
West Newbury, VT has a BackRoom which provides food on a year-round basis. They also provide Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for local families, as well as Christmas gifts.
Vermont Community Action Partnership offers many programs to assist with many different needs ranging from housing assistance to energy assistance including weatherization and crisis fuel, health and wellbeing programs, programs for children and community building, as well as financial stability programs. You can find your local office at www.vermontcap.org.
Many of us are aware of the Listen Center Thrift Stores, but they offer other programs as well. They have a food shelf, heating assistance, housing assistance, holiday baskets and more. You can contact them through their website at www.listencs.org, via email at contact@listencs.org, or by phone at (603)448-4553.
There are a great deal more services available in our area that I do not have the column space to write about. If none of the above programs can assist you, ask them for referrals to other programs or speak with others within your community. A pastor, a friend, a school, your doctor or therapist. Anyone who may be able to point you in the right direction.
Again, if you are able to donate or volunteer, please do. Letàhelp each other out.
