A Blessing in Disguise
Tina Gilson
January 22, 2026
The phrases, “a blessing in disguise” and “be careful what you wish for”, are ones we are all familiar with. They both can be very hard to see and agree with in the moment, as it often arrives dressed as misfortune, but most of us can see how true these sayings are in hindsight.

For example, many of us can think back to our first loves and the first time we had our hearts broken. How many of you prayed for it to work out, to get back together and to be each other's forever love? How many of you, in hindsight, can see that wouldn’t have been best for you and it would have prevented you from finding the true love of your life?
I am a firm believer that we get routed in certain directions in life to teach us lessons or give us experiences we need to have for our soul's growth or to simply redirect us when we get off the path. Sometimes it is karmic, sometimes it’s the universe giving us a slap to the back of the head. Sometimes it’s the universe saying it has something better in store if we just trust it to do its job.

I have had personal relationships of various natures in my life that ended on a negative note. I do believe many were blessings in disguise, however. One relationship in particular that ended exactly how I prayed for it to end (an example of “be careful what you wish for”) was very unhealthy and unpleasant, but it also led me to a lot of healing and personal growth. Ultimately, I found myself finally making my happiness and desires a priority for the first time in my life. It led me to become my authentic self and doing the work I was meant to do.
If this loss had not occurred, none of the blessings and joy that followed would have happened as well. I would never have become attuned to Reiki, I would never have accepted and embraced my psychic and mediumship abilities the way I have, I wouldn’t have opened my businesses, and I wouldn’t be writing this column. I wouldn’t have traveled as extensively as I do, attended all the concerts I do, or done so many other things that feed my soul.
Losing wanted connections can also propel you into looking at your shadows and begin healing, if you’re willing to be honest with yourself and do the work. Sometimes you need to change career paths. Sometimes it is meant to move you forward in a way you wouldn’t have otherwise or meet new people who enhance your life in the best of ways.
The next time life doesn’t go as planned, or you find yourself in a situation that is less than you hoped for, consider that it might be the universe's way of intervening on your behalf and keeping you from something that isn’t meant for you, or guiding you to what is.
