New Hampshire's First-In-The-Nation Primary Election has been excised from the vanguard of the Primary Election cycle and replaced with South Carolina, which has now been anointed as the first state to cast ballots in the next Presidential Primary Election.

The North Haverhill FairIs Coming To Town Soon
For the fair, it has been a long, successful, community-themed road since the first fair was held as a one-day event in 1944 in Rintha Nutter's field and the village area of North Haverhill. The Pink Granite Grange, located in the area of the present VFW Hall, the old Town Clerk's office, and the church, had for years sponsored an annual ag exhibit for the fall harvest.

For many years, our area veterans’ group would fall in, accompanied by a military history float, marchers, family members, and friends. As I recall from my many marches in this parade, the weather was usually beautiful. I've never marched the route in the rain. Enthusiastic crowds packed the long street, cheering and offering our troops and float participants cold water or a famous Hatchland chocolate milk along the way.

Over the past three weeks, I have been working on a story about a legend who lived among us, the late Doctor Harry Rowe of Wells River. It was he and his wife, the delightful and musical Mary Rowe, who started the Wells River Clinic medical practice in 1946, a small enterprise that soon took over their living room and most of their first floor.

We have had many bear visits during the day this year. There was a time when bears here were most active at night, looking around for anything to eat or get into, wreaking havoc, like smashing an empty container, biting chunks out of children's toys, scattering clothes on a clothesline, or standing at our outside doors to peer through the glass windows.

According to notes sent me by the American Battle Monuments Commission, by the end of World War II several hundred temporary burial grounds had been established on battlefields around the world. In 1947, 14 sites in foreign countries were selected to become permanent burial grounds by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The locations of the sites corresponded closely with the course of military operations during the war.

People from outside the area, who had no idea where they were located at that moment, asked Harry about the sign. They always got an answer from Harry, sometimes long, sometimes short, depending on how busy he was at the moment.

US Navy Veteran Steven Seminerio Remembered On This Memorial Day. He And His Wife, Marilyn, Were Long Time Residents Here
Last Monday afternoon, May 18, 2026, the family of US Navy veteran Steven Seminerio of East Haverhill, along with area veterans of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and friends, came together at the Pike Cemetery to pay their final respects and honor the extraordinary life of Steve Seminerio.
He was a local minister who lived in this area for many years with his lovely wife, Marilyn, before retiring to Concord, Massachusetts. Steve died in February 2026 at the age of 100 years; Marilyn had predeceased him in March 2025 at the age of 97.

It was there that one of the North Country's largest and busiest railheads was located about 200 yards to my east. The noises I could hear coming from the miniature train sets traveling around the tabletop course paled in comparison to the authentic old-time railroad activities and sounds that occurred every hour of every day along Woodsville's Central Street.

This is a spring ritual around here. Also, ritual is the interesting behavior of the two phoebes who come here to build their future home. Without fail, they fly in and begin resting on phone wires and clothes lines strung up along the front of the porch, eventually, where the phoebes will hatch little ones, the hummingbirds will fly in and out throughout the summer and fall, and warn all species, even their own, to stay away from the red feeder.

So, it was a big surprise when Alan recently informed me that he intends to retire from the active tax prep life and move into something like spending "more time with my loved ones and reflect on the journey thus far." On the previous Sunday this month, it was a delight to take a hike down at the Bedell Bridge State Park, just to silently poke around the perimeter of a major oxbow there, observing ripples and bubbles in the murky waters that hold so much emerging life, along with all the different noises associated with the activities taking hold in and on and around the meandering waterways.

As far as heating the house with a 4 AM blazing woodstove every morning to chase those 20’s and 30s temperatures away, after more than 40 years of wood prep and burning, I see myself as a failed wood guy. I am about to run out of wood!
Haverhill Annual Town Meeting Was Lightly Attended (150+/-) And Enjoyed Smooth Sailing
If you look at the total voter list of around 2950 registered voters, few attended the town meeting. There were no long check-in lines, no waiting times for several paper balloting sessions, and every warrant article was passed in the affirmative. There was no rancor.
