Cheryl D. Barnes

Cheryl D. Barnes, 79, of Concord, NH, passed away Friday, August 14, 2026, following a period of declining health. She died peacefully in the comfort and familiarity of her own home with her three daughters by her side.
Cheryl was born in Woodsville, NH, on February 21, 1947, to James and Verna (Brown) Barber, and she was raised in Haverhill, NH. She was a proud alumna of Haverhill Academy and Concord Commercial College. She worked at WKXL Radio in the 1960s and again in the 1980s. In between and after working at the radio station, she took care of children in her home. Her work in childcare spanned several years during which she formed many lasting relationships with the families she served. Eventually, Cheryl embarked on a new adventure that brought her a rewarding career as a secretary with Concord Hospital. During her recent hospital stay, Cheryl had many visitors from former colleagues who remembered her for the personalized scrubs and caps she made for them during her tenure there.
In her free time, Cheryl enjoyed sewing, baking, crossword puzzles, and reading. Cheryl often showed her appreciation for others with homemade cookies, with chocolate chip cookies being her specialty. She often dropped off tins of cookies at local businesses and always offered to provide the dessert at social functions. She was a devoted friend, nurturing and maintaining long-term friendships through regular get-togethers and group breakfasts. She was deeply involved in charity work, whether she was sewing blankets for local domestic violence shelters, or making special pillowcases for ovarian cancer retreats. Cheryl personified the spirit of generosity and celebrated everyone’s victories as if they were her own. Cheryl’s most cherished role in life was being a Grammy and spending precious time with her two beautiful grandchildren.
Cheryl is survived by her daughters, Meghan Barnes of Concord; Sarah Potter and husband Matt of Pembroke; and Katherine Barnes and partner Kevin Doerr of Warner; grandchildren, Kylan Doerr-Barnes and Maeven Doerr-Barnes; goddaughter, Molly Todd; and many cousins and other extended family members. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Stephan and Thomas Barber.
Family and friends are invited to gather Saturday, September 12, 2026, 1:00-3:00 pm at the Cremation Society of New Hampshire at 172 King Street, Boscawen, NH. Guests will be provided an opportunity to share stories and memories during the Celebration of Life taking place from 1:15pm to 1:45pm in the funeral home chapel.
