Support River Bend CTC and Work-Based Learning

By Gary Scruton, President of The Cohase Chamber of Commerce

To the editor:

The Cohase Chamber of Commerce recognizes that school budgets are more than tight these days, as costs continue to rise rapidly within an environment of decreasing support from the state and federal governments.  We’re pleased that efforts are underway to study possible reconfiguration of the schools in the Cohase region with the goals being to increase offerings and quality while also realizing some tax relief.

For the next and future school years, we hope that an important component of these discussions and decision-making processes will include supporting, and even expanding, offerings at both the River Bend Career & Technical Center and in the Work-Based Learning opportunities at our region’s high schools. To survive and thrive, the Cohase region business community needs students and graduates entering the workforce with both job-related and soft skills.

We applaud the fact that enrollments in technical programs and opportunities for work-based learning at our high schools are all on the rise and believe they need to be supported and encouraged going forward.  Any efforts to scale back such opportunities is a ‘lose-lose’ proposition for the economic health of our region.
